You can pick up passport application forms from your local Post Office and apply by post, or use the Post Office Check and Send service.
Before you start
Applying for a passport can take up to 10 weeks. Do not book travel until you have a valid passport - your new passport will not have the same number as your old one.
You'll need
- a digital photo
- a credit or debit card
- your National Insurance number (if you have one)
- details of your parents' birth dates and birthplaces (you'll also need their passport numbers if they have UK passports)

How long it takes
Your passport should arrive within 10 weeks if you apply using the standard online service.
It should arrive:
- by the end of the next working day if you use the Online Premium service
- within 7 working days if you use the Fast Track service

It can take longer if:
- HM Passport Office need to ask you for more information or documents
- your application hasn't been filled out correctly
- your supporting documents haven't been certified correctly
- your photographs don't meet the rules
Getting your first adult passport
You need to get an adult passport if you're 16 or over and:
- this is your first UK passport
- your last UK passport was reported lost or stolen
- your last UK passport was issued before 1 January 1994
- you've changed your name and cannot provide documents to show the link between your old and new names
- you've changed your gender
- you cannot provide your last UK passport
Renewing a passport
You can renew your passport online if:
- you're 16 or over (or turning 16 in the next 3 weeks)
- you currently have or had a UK passport which you can account for
- your most recent passport has not been cancelled or reported as lost or stolen
- you can provide a digital photo
Digital photos
You'll need a digital photo to apply for a passport online. You can:
- get someone to take a photo of you
- take a 'selfie'
- use a photo from a professional photographer or photo booth
Photo rules
Your photo must:
- be in colour
- be unedited, without any filters
- be at least 600 x 750 pixels
- be no more than 5MB
- be in JPEG format
- show your head, shoulders and upper body
- contain no other objects or people
- be taken against a plain light-coloured background
- be in clear focus and good lighting
- be without any shadows on your face or behind you
